Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has a sense of pessimism regarding a diplomatic resolution to the tensions along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon and on the 16th of September during a phone call with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin he warned that the likelihood of reaching a settlement with Hezbollah is not only diminishing, but the Lebanese group are strengthening ties with Hamas

“The possibility of a settlement in the north is passing. Hezbollah continues to tie itself to Hamas – the direction is clear,”

On the 15th, Hezbollah carried out 10 operations against Israeli military sites, retaliating for Israeli attacks on Lebanon. This spike in military exchanges has led Israeli officials to increase threats of a major offensive, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly telling his cabinet that a “large-scale confrontation” with Hezbollah is imminent.

Netanyahu has instructed Israeli forces to prepare for a possible escalation, with the reasoning of requiring a “change in the situation” in the north.

On the Lebanese side, media outlets reported that Hezbollah’s recent attacks targeted key Israeli military and intelligence installations, including sites as far south as Tel Aviv with the being in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut in July.

Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary General Naim Qassem confirmed on September 15 that the group’s August retaliation for Shukr’s death was successful, despite an Israeli media blackout. Qassem stated that over 20 Israeli personnel were killed, with more than 70 injured in the operation.

The phone call between Gallant and Austin also touched on the stalled negotiations for a prisoner exchange in Gaza. Israel’s refusal to withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor, a strategic area along the Gaza / Egypt border, has hampered progress and as the conflict in Gaza drags on, Hezbollah has made clear that it will not halt its operations until hostilities in Gaza cease.

Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary General Naim Qassem once again has reiterated on Sunday

"If Israel unleashes a war, we will confront it – and there will be heavy losses on both sides,"

Israeli officials have been ramping up efforts to secure northern settlements and return displaced residents to the border areas, but Hezbollah has warned that such moves will be met with further resistance.

As diplomatic options fade and military posturing intensifies, Israel is facing a potential two-front war, one with Hamas in Gaza and the other with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The coming days will be critical in determining whether the northern border crisis can be contained or if a conflict expansion is on the horizon.
